How to Fix a Bowed Sofa

A comfortable sofa is one that allows you to sink into it, but there can always be too much of a good thing. As sofas get older, their springs and straps lose resilience, allowing the seat to sink down and become bowed. If your couch is sunken and bowed, try a quick fix that frugal people have relied upon for years. You'll sit up higher on the cushions and find it easier to get up once you're ready to go.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Plywood sheet
  • Saw
  • Medium sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cushions from the sofa. Measure the cushion platform width from underneath the right arm to underneath the left arm. Measure the platform from the back cushion to 3 inches before the front edge.

    • 2

Cut a piece of plywood the same size as you measured the cushion platform. Sand the edges to remove any slivers or rough spots that might snag the couch fabric.

    • 3

Place the plywood on the cushion platform. Push it down so it's snug against the arms and fits flush against the surface.

    • 4

Put the cushions back on the sofa. Your seat should now be firmer, allowing you to sit higher.
