How to Get a Large Couch Through a Doorway

Moving to a new home tends to be a hassle. This is only compounded when you haul your beloved couch up several flights of stairs to discover that it does not fit through your new door. Your mind may race to other possibilities, such as trying to somehow fit it in through a window. If your home is on the ground floor and you have a large window, this may not be a bad idea. For that third-floor apartment, however, you have other options.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cushions from your couch and try to fit it through the door again. If they extended past the couch, removing them may give you that extra fraction of an inch necessary to get the couch through the door.

    • 2

Remove your couch's legs. Depending on the style of the piece, this could give you a few extra inches to work with. You can now turn the couch onto its back and attempt to slide it through the door. With the legs out of the way, it may fit.

    • 3

Try other angles. If the couch will not go straight through the doorway because of a nearby wall, try tilting it.

    • 4

Take your door off its hinges if it is blocking the couch. This may give you another inch or two.

    • 5

Examine your alternatives. At this point, you may seriously wish to consider the option of using a window.

    • 6

Disassemble the couch if nothing else works. You can then take the pieces inside individually and reassemble it in the correct location. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, hire a professional.
