Getting Scratches Out of a KRAMFORS Leather Sofa

The KRAMFORS line at Ikea is a group of leather home furnishings that have, in the past, included leather sofas. These are covered with top-grain leather that has been dyed and embossed all over the surface. While generally durable, the leather on these sofas can be scratched by pets or thoughtless visitors. The leather is usually stapled to the frame to prevent warping, which can make replacing it tricky. However, you can remove scratches at home with just a few hours of work, leaving the sofa looking good as new.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the entire surface of the KRAMFORS sofa with the cleaning compound and sponge included in Ikea's Absorb leather care set.

    • 2

Seal any large scratches that go all the way through the surface of the leather and expose the stuffing by filling them with leather-safe heavy filler. The compound is sticky; apply it a little at a time with a palette knife until you have filled the gap. (You can cover shallower scratches with the items used in Steps 4 and 5.)

    • 3

Turn the heavy filler into a hardened surface by applying heat to the area with a hairdryer.

    • 4

Smooth leather recoloring balm in the same shade as the rest of the couch onto the scratched and filled areas with a soft sponge. Allow it to dry.

    • 5

Treat the entire sofa surface with Ikea's Absorb leather cream, which contains the recommended leather preservatives, UV-barriers and emulsifiers to keep the couch looking its best.
