Kids and Pets

• Light leather couches can get dirty easily, particularly if children live in the home. Kids may drop food or drinks on the couch, staining the sofa with items like jelly and fruit juice. In addition, pets may shed on the couch, with dark hair or fur showing up particularly well on light-colored sofas.

Wear and Tear

• Leather couches can get pierced or snag easily on such items as jewelry, utensils or office supplies. Also, various cracks and scratches may appear on the sofa due to standard wear and tear. These markings remain more obvious on light-colored couches, and as a result, leather couches can age quickly.

Dye

• Dye from different items may rub off on a light-colored couch, permanently discoloring the sofa in some cases. For instance, clothing dye from jeans or colorful skirts can streak leather couches, particularly during warm weather days when residents sweat profusely. Just laying a newspaper on a light leather sofa can leave ink imprints on the couch, as well.

Maintenance

• Owning a light leather couch requires excessive maintenance. While some protective leather sprays effectively guard the sofa against spills and stains, most couches require multiple treatments throughout the year. Residents must hand-wash the leather couch using a combination of lukewarm water and mild detergent. Hot water or alcohol-based products can shrink or discolor certain types of leather.
