Scratches on your leather couch can detract from the appearance. When your pet's nails or a sharp object scrape against the leather surface, they leave surface scratches in the natural material. Leather is similar to our skin; damage shows on the surface when scratches occur, but these can be healed and fixed with the right techniques and supplies. You can fix a scratched couch and return it to its previous appearance with furniture polish and a few other careful techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a nickel-sized amount of leather cleaner onto a clean cloth. Rub the leather cleaner over the scratched area to remove surface dirt, dust or stains. This helps to prepare the leather for fixing the scratches.

    • 2
Olive oil's natural moisturizing properties are beneficial to leather.

Moisten another clean cloth with a nickel-sized amount of olive oil. Rub the surface of the scratched leather to moisten the surface. Allow the olive oil to be absorbed into the leather for one hour. The moisture from the oil helps soften the leather, causing the scratches to diminish in appearance.

Apply furniture polish directly to the remaining scratches in your couch. Wipe over the scratches with a dry cloth to remove excess polish, while leaving the rest to fill in the scratches. Let the furniture polish sit on the leather surface for three to five hours so it can dry completely.

Apply a matching shoe polish to a dry cloth. Smear the shoe polish over the scratched area of the leather surface.

Shoe polish is a form of leather dye.

Wipe with a dry cloth, moving in circular motions, to blend the shoe polish into the leather. Allow the shoe polish to dry.

    • 6

Add another coat of shoe polish, if necessary, to achieve the right color. Several light coats are better than one heavy coat. Let the polish dry in between applications.
