How to Reupholster New Cushions for Furniture

Reupholstering new cushions for a chair, bench or sofa allows you to transform the appearance of the piece of furniture whenever you desire. Old or worn out cushions make the furniture look uninviting and old. Instead of paying a professional to cover new cushions, complete the task yourself to save money and express your creativity. Touches like decorative trim along the edges or hand-sewn beads or sequins over the center of the piece provide instant personalization and warmth.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the top of the cushion foam and add one inch for seam allowance. Note this measurement for each piece that forms the top and bottom of the cushion. Also measure the length and width of one of the sides of the foam cushion and add one inch for seam allowance. Because each cushion typically has four identical sides, you can use the measurements for the remaining three sides. However, take separate measurements for rectangular cushions with two long and two short sides.

    • 2

Lay pre-ironed fabric face down on a table. Transfer the noted measurements for the six sides of a cushion on the fabric using colored chalk. Mark the lines as straight as possible.

    • 3

Cut along the lines on the fabric using sharp scissors. Pull out loose threads around the edges.

    • 4

Join the short ends of the four short fabric pieces together using a 1/2-inch seam. Sew the ends of the first and last piece together to form a fabric loop. Carefully iron over the seams to press them open.

    • 5

Spread the fabric for the bottom piece of the cushion on a table. Align the zipper so it falls along the width of the fabric. Push pins to secure the zipper to the fabric.

    • 6

Insert pins to secure the corresponding length from the fabric loop to the other side of the zipper. Align a seam on the loop against a corner of the bottom piece. Remove the pins, in turn, before sewing the zipper to the fabric. Repeat the process of securing the other three sides of the fabric loop to the bottom piece, with their right sides together.

    • 7

Insert pins to secure the other edges of the fabric loop to the fabric for the top of the cushion. Ensure the seams on the loop match the corners of the fabric. Remove the pins before sewing the pieces together.

    • 8

Pull the zipper open. Insert your hand inside the cover and turn it right side out. Smooth out the corners of the cover with your fingers before inserting the cushion. Pull the zipper closed.
