How to Reupholster a Leather Couch

A leather couch uses strong and durable leather pieces as the covering for the couch frame and padding. Without the upholstery, you simply have a wood or metal frame with thick padding glued to the frame. When you reupholster the couch, you use new leather over the top. Replacing the leather can change the overall look of the couch and gets rid of any damaged spots, including melting or burns and ordinary stains.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the couch upside down. The bottom should feature a strip of fabric stapled across the frame. Remove the staples with a staple remover or a pair of needle-nose pliers. Examine the bottom of the frame, looking for the staples holding the leather to the frame. Remove those staples.

    • 2

Lift the leather off the frame. As you peel away the fabric, you might encounter other staples higher up. Remove any staples you encounter but keep the leather pieces as intact as possible. Lay the leather upholstery pieces to one side.

    • 3

Lay new leather or upholstery fabric on top of the pieces you removed from the couch. Attach sewing pins around the edges, which hold the original pieces firmly to the new fabric. Cut around the edges with scissors, making the new pieces the same size as the old pieces, and remove the pins.

Wrap the new pieces around the couch, replacing the old covering. Smooth down the fabric on the couch and hold in place with one hand. Place a staple gun flat against the frame and press down. The staple gun shoots a staple into the frame, affixing the leather. Work your way around the couch, attaching the fabric to the old leather couch.

Cut a piece of fabric to the same length and width as the couch bottom. Place the fabric on the bottom of the couch and attach with staple gun. Attach staples around all sides of the bottom of the couch frame.
