Arrange the larger and smaller wood beams on a flat surface. The larger pieces form the base of the futon, while the smaller pieces act as the support beams. Gently sand each piece with fine-grit sandpaper, removing any splinters or rough spots on the wood.
Place one of the larger pieces on a flat surface and measure 35 inches up. Place a second, larger piece on that spot. Set one of the smaller beams on the edge of the larger beams, so the piece overhangs by 2 inches on each of the larger beams.
Screw two wood screws into each end of the smaller beam. The screw should push through both layers of wood and sit flush with the upper piece. Attach a second screw to the opposite end of the smaller piece, making sure the screw goes through both pieces.
Attach a second smaller wood beam to the opposite end of the larger pieces with the wood screws. Evenly space the smaller beams across the top of the larger ones. Screw two screws through each small beam, attaching each beam to both pieces of larger wood. Repeat the process with the remaining larger and smaller pieces of wood, which creates the top and bottom of the futon frame.
Measure 6 inches from the each end of one frame piece. Attach a hinge with wood screws. Measure 6 inches from the opposite side and attach a second hinge. Screw through each hinge into the second frame piece. Turn the frame upside down and screw four metal legs into the bottom, placing one leg in each corner.
