How to Measure Spring Wear on a Couch

The springs in your sofa keep your couch from sagging. Most couches use eight-way, hand-tied coil springs, according to Upholster! magazine. These springs are strong and resilient and last longer than springs that are merely nailed or sewn to the frame of the couch. If your couch begins to sag, it's a sure sign that one or more springs is wearing out. You can check the springs by opening the couch.

Sit down on the couch. If one part of the couch feels lower than the other or you feel the spring poking through the couch, you definitely have a spring wear issue. Get up and see if the couch is sagging where you were just sitting.

Turn the sofa upside-down. Have someone help you with this process if the sofa is heavy. Pull the fabric back covering the springs. Examine the springs. If any spring is loose, slip it back into place. If the clips holding the springs in place are broken, unscrew them, remove them, and put new ones in. If a spring looks like it is sagging, flip it over.

Put the fabric back into place, and turn the couch back over. Sit on the couch to see if it still sags. If it does, replace the sagging springs with new ones.
