How to Measure the Foam Inserts for a Couch

Old couch cushions may become worn down and flat from heavy use. Replace standard or L-shape inserts with new foam cushions when updating the sofa. Online sources, upholstery suppliers and fabric stores sell the insert materials needed for the cushions. Provide the store with the measurements, which will enable the sales clerk to help select the proper insert.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the measuring tape across the front of the cushion from side to side. This will give the width of the foam insert that you need to order. Write down the measurement.

    • 2

Measure one side of the cushion from front to back to get the depth of the piece. The depth covers the area where the cushion extends from the front of the couch to the back of the seat. Record the measurement.

    • 3

Hold the measuring tape at the front of the cushion. Search for a seam that you can feel with your fingers or easily see. Measure the area between the two rows of stitching at the top and bottom of the cushion. If you can't detect a seam, measure the thickness of the foam at its thickest point, from the top of the cushion to the bottom. Record the measurement.

Set the end of the measuring tape against the arm that extends outward from the L-shaped cushion on some sofas. Measure the width and depth of the extension and write down the numbers.
