How to Repair Leather That Peeled Off a Long Sofa

Similar to human skin, leather requires care to keep it soft and supple. When the leather upholstery on your sofa gets overly dry due to improper cleaning, water damage or exposure to heat sources, it leads to the cracking and peeling of the surface. Although you can't heal leather like you can cracked or peeling skin, you can repair the surface to smooth it out and restore its appearance.

Things You'll Need

  • Leather cleaner
  • Cloths
  • Abrasive scrubbing pad
  • Leather preparation solution
  • Sandpaper
  • Leather glue
  • Leather filler
  • Leather dye
  • Moisturizer

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a quarter-sized amount of leather cleaner onto a clean cloth. Wipe the surface of the peeled leather to remove dirt, stains and debris.

    • 2

Scuff the peeled surface by scrubbing it with an abrasive scrubber. This helps remove small bits of the peeling leather, but also roughs up the surface so the leather dye adheres better.

    • 3

Moisten a clean cloth with the leather preparation solution. Wipe the preparation solution over the scuffed leather, and allow it to dry. The leather preparation solution further etches the surface for better adhesion.

    • 4
Peeled portions of leather must be removed to prepare the surface.

Treat any remaining damaged leather by sanding it with a fine-grit sandpaper. Remove as much cracked or peeled leather as possible by wearing it away with the sandpaper. Wipe the surface off with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.

    • 5

Apply leather glue to openings in the leather or areas that aren't laying flat. This helps to keep the surface smooth when you finish your repair. Allow the leather glue to dry completely. Sand the surface smooth to wear away any bumps caused by the glue.

    • 6

Fill in any pitted areas or holes in the leather with leather filler. Smooth the filler into the surface, and remove the excess filler by wiping the leather with a dry cloth. Let the leather filler dry for one hour. Apply one to two more thin coats of leather filler, letting the filler dry between each coat, until the surface is smooth.

Sand the dried leather filler to smooth the leather surface. Wipe the leather off with a dry cloth. Apply one to three coats of matching leather dye in thin applications. Spray the leather dye evenly, and allow it to dry between coats. Let the leather sofa dry overnight after the last coat.

Rub a quarter-sized amount of leather moisturizer into the surface. Remove the excess with a dry cloth.
