How to Tighten a Lane Reclining Sofa

About Lane Reclining Sofas

• Lane manufactures reclining sofas in a number of different styles and materials, both two-seater and three-seater models. All Lane reclining sofas feature a tempered steel frame that allows them to withstand continual use. These sofas are set to the reclining position either by pressing forward on a side handle of the sofa or, in the case of middle-positioned recliners, simply by leaning backwards on the headrest.

Tightening Points

• The two main points that may need tightening on Lane sofa recliners are the recliner lever and the reclining extension. The recliner arm is the part of the sofa that you pull on to extend the sofa to the reclining position. The reclining extension consists of metal brackets that elevate the cushioned recliner padding.

Working Safely

• When working on a Lane reclining sofa that isn't operating properly, always prop up the reclining extension while you are working. Set a small stool or stack of books underneath the extension to prevent it from suddenly snapping back into place. This helps prevent pinched or possibly broken fingers.

Tightening Brackets

• The metal brackets on the majority of Lane reclining sofas are held in place with a nut-and-bolt assembly. Tightening these requires two tools: one to hold the bolt in place and one to tighten the nut. In the tight spaces beneath a Lane recliner, use a socket wrench with a reduced handle. Slip the wrench over the end of the bolt and tighten the nut using the socket wrench. Once the bolts and nuts are tightened, check your work by operating the recliner lever several times to make sure the nuts are still secure.

Tightening Recliner Lever

• In most models, the arm is held in place on the rotation hub by means of screws through the recliner lever. The screw tops are covered with wooden plugs to blend into the lever arm. Look for the plugs and carefully pry them out of place with a plastic tool to prevent damage to the wood. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
