How to Keep Sofas From Sliding on Porcelain Floors

Keeping sofas from sliding on porcelain floors is crucial not only for comfort but also for safety. In a few minutes, you can solve the problem in a way that protects your family from the risk of injury from falling when a couch slides. Sofa feet can scratch porcelain floors. Take care of the investment in your floors with pads designed to go under each foot. Put the brakes on the sliding sofa with an inexpensive floor protection product.

Instructions

Measure the sliding sofa's legs. Take a look at what the sofa rests on. Most will have a small leg, some have a round foot (bun foot) and some have only a small base at each corner. The shape may be irregular, so measure across the widest part. Use the ruler to measure the base of the leg from front to back, and from side to side. Note the largest measurement. If the measurement is between two lines, go with the larger measurement as the base of the foot has to fit into the floor protector.

Call your local hardware store to make sure they have a rubber or non-slip floor protector that will fit a sofa leg that size.

Take your measurements and ruler with you to look at the floor protectors. Pick out a rubber or non-slip version. Most hardware stores have another type of product in the same section that are called glides; these are the opposite of what you want as they help furniture slide on the floor. Rubber will help your sofa stay put on the porcelain floor. Products designed to protect hardwood floors will work on your porcelain floors. Don't get protectors designed for carpet; they have hard plastic spikes.

Get stick-on gripper pads if there aren't any floor protectors that fit the feet of your couch. These are heavy vinyl pads with a textured surface often used under appliances.

Get plenty of help to raise the couch. Raise one end (an inch is enough), and place the protectors under each foot. Raise the other end, and set the protectors for those two feet. Set the sofa down, and make sure all the feet are centered on the floor protectors. Now the sofa will stay put.
