Choose a leather restoration kit. Purchase this kit online or at a furniture store. Some kits are for color repair only and will not have everything you need to fix your crack. The proper kit for this job will come equipped with a matching color, leather prep, application sponges, one abrasive pad, a palette knife and heavy filler. You can also purchase any of these items separately.
Prepare your work area. Use some sort of cover to protect the area surrounding your sofa. Also, put on work gloves before beginning. The chemicals used can cause damage to the skin or other items.
Prep your sofa. Using the sponge, apply prep solution onto the cracked area of the leather. Use your abrasive pad to rub the prep into the sofa. This will remove dirt, oil and the manufacturer’s finish so that the new chemicals will take. This process will also lift the color. Do not panic. You will restore this color once the crack has been fixed.
Apply filler. Using a palette knife, wipe a thin layer of filler into the crack. Allow the filler to completely dry. You can test the area with your finger before proceeding.
Apply the color. Using a sponge, apply a thin layer of matching color to the area. Gently rub in the color and allow to dry.
Add a layer of finishing spray. Hold the spray about 6 to 8 inches from the surface and spray on a thin layer. Allow sofa to dry for approximately 48 hours.
