How to Know If Sofa Sleepers Are Comfortable

Sofa sleepers are often couches that double as sleeping surfaces. While sometimes known as convertible sofa beds, many sofa sleepers lack a pull-out mattress. While either option can be considered a sofa for sleeping, comfort tends to be subjective. You may want to consider others' input on sleepers, but make your own "test drive" of various sofa sleepers and convertible sofa beds before purchasing.

Instructions

    • 1

Read reviews of sofa sleepers you are considering purchasing. Read online customer reviews to get an idea of comfort level. An example of some of the top-rated sofa sleepers is available in "Resources."

Look for sleepers that don't have springs or multiple metal support bars running underneath the mattress. These can cause uneven surfaces, lumps and painful pressure points. At the very least, choose a sleeper with a thicker cushion that can shield some of the feeling of the bars. Some sofa sleepers don't have pull-out mattresses and instead allow you to move the backing or recline the couch to create a flat sleeping surface on the seat section of the sofa. This reduces the need for metal supports that can poke and prod you while you sleep.

Go to the store in person and try out some of the sofa beds. The best way to determine comfort level is to try the bed yourself. Consider firmness, thickness and sturdiness.
