How to Repair a Torn Leather Couch

Leather is a durable and easy-to-clean fabric, which is why it is so often used on furniture, especially couches. It takes a lot of force and usually a sharp object to tear the leather. If a rip or tear should occur, you'll need a handful of materials to get the repair done. Luckily, the process isn't that difficult.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp scissors
  • Leather filler
  • Hair dryer
  • Leather glue
  • Subpatch

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off any frayed and jagged edges from the torn area, using scissors. It is always best to work with a clean, smooth area for repair if possible.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of leather filler inside of the tear. The filler is a mix of liquid leather compound and adhesive. Use the hair dryer to speed up the drying time. Apply another layer of filler as needed so there is not much of a deep gap between the inside of the torn area and the new subpatch you will apply.

    • 3

Place a thin layer of leather glue around the edge of the torn area. Quickly place the subpatch over the hole, and press firmly around the edges to help the patch bond with the glue and dry immediately. Allow the glue to dry completely for an hour or so.

    • 4

Dab a small amount of leather protector on a soft cloth, and apply it to the patch. This will add shine and help soften the edges of the patch.

    • 5

Dip the corner of a soft cloth in the liquid leather color, and lightly apply it to the patch to help it blend in with the rest of the leather couch. Allow to dry completely before touching the area.
