How to Repair a Rip in My Leather Sofa

Leather sofas add a touch of class and sophistication to any room in a house. These sofas are quite expensive---higher-end models can cost thousands of dollars. Cats, rambunctious children or accident-prone adults can all cause a tear in a leather sofa. Repairing small-to-moderate leather tears can be accomplished at home. A very large tear may need to be taken to a professional leather restorer.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak a soft cloth in rubbing alcohol and clean the area around the tear.

    • 2

Cut away the uneven, worn edges of the tear with a scalpel. This will make it simpler to repair the damage.

    • 3

Place the canvas cloth supplied in the leather repair kit into the tear with a pair of tweezers. Make sure the cloth is completely inside the couch and that it is laying flat.

    • 4

Apply a dab of the glue provided in the kit into the area between the leather couch and the canvas cloth with a toothpick. Press down on the couch to secure the cloth and leather couch together. Allow the glue to dry for several hours.

    • 5

Add a thin layer of the leather filler that is found in the kit over the tear. Dry the first layer with a hair dryer for five minutes. Continue to apply thin layers until the tear is 75 percent filled, making sure to dry each layer between applications.

    • 6

Apply two coats of the leather color, which is found in the leather touch-up kit, with a sponge over the torn area and one-quarter of an inch around the tear to blend the color more effectively.

    • 7

Place a thin layer of the filler over any cracks that are formed after the leather color is applied. Allow the filler to dry for five to 10 minutes and sand it until smooth with 1200-grit sandpaper.

    • 8

Place another layer of the leather color onto the affected area with the sponge. Allow it to dry and cover with a layer of leather sealant, which is also found in the leather touch-up kit.
