Mix a batch of upholstery shampoo as instructed on the bottle. Be certain the shampoo you are using is suitable for cleaning by hand. Some manufacturer's use the term shampoo to refer to any fabric cleaner. The label should state that is suitable for use in a dry-foam or rotary machine; not suitable for a hot water extractor.
Agitate the solution to create a frothy foam. You will be using a damp sponge covered with foam to perform the cleaning. In this manner, you will use less liquid on the upholstery, which will lessen the chance of water rings forming after the cleaning is complete. Water rings occur when fabric has been wet too much in one spot.
Dip the sponge in the solution and tightly wring out. Scoop up a generous helping of suds onto the sponge. Work the cleaning solution over the fabric using a tight, overlapping circular pattern.
Blot each section with a clean, white towel as you finish. With a folded towel, brush the nap in the same direction that you used for cleaning with the sponge. This will reset the nap for even drying.
