How Do I Make Wooden Leg Extensions for Sofa Chair?

Lifting a sofa with wooden leg extensions can add height and elegance, transforming a sofa instantly. While you can use legs that were designed for sofas, you can also easily transform other wooden objects, such as balls or pegs you might find at a craft store to make wooden leg extensions for your sofa. Whether you want to make it easier to get up and down from your couch, make it the right height for a taller coffee table or just give it a new look, adding wooden leg extensions is an inexpensive way to change your sofa.

Instructions

Paint or stain your wooden leg extensions as desired. Allow legs to dry completely. If necessary, drill holes for your bolts. Measure half the length of the hanger bolt and mark your drill bit with tape to use as a guide while you drill. Be sure to use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the bolt to make sure it will have something to hold on to. Mark the center of the leg extension and hold it steady as you drill your holes straight down for the fastener. Insert fasteners into the leg extensions.

Turn your couch on its back and hold the legs up to the couch where you plan to attach them. Make sure the fasteners will hit solid wood when you attach them and the legs will not stick out past the couch to avoid a sloppy look and stubbed toes. Use a pencil to mark the spot where you want to attach the legs. Use a measuring tape to make sure the legs are on the same spot on each side of the couch, so it will look even and clean once you are finished.

Measure the fastener to find out how deep of a hole you need to drill into the bottom of your couch. Measure your fastener and mark the same length on your drill bit with a piece of tape. Drill holes for the fasteners to go in. Hold the drill steady, so it is going in straight along the edge of the couch as you drill.

Screw the legs firmly into the sofa. Have a friend help you lift the sofa upright. This can be more difficult once the sofa has legs because it is taller.
