Remove the front wooden piece of the solid wood crib, crib mattress and spring frame from the crib by unscrewing its connecting screws with a screwdriver.
Reinforce the back two joints with a steel corner brace screwed into the center back corners.
Measure the size of the crib space and draw the measurements onto the plywood piece. Cut the plywood to size using a jigsaw.
Secure the plywood into place with the hinge braces. Place the braces under the plywood at each of the four leg pieces.
Strip the crib of any finishes, paints and stains with the 120 grit sandpaper and a circular rotating sander. Sand again with the 220-grit to remove any scratches in the wood.
Rub the crib down with a lightly moistened cloth diaper to remove the sawdust from sanding.
Re-stain the wood to your desired color using a wood stain. Following the instructions on the stain container. Paint the finish onto the wood with a paint brush. You can finish the wood with a varnish if desired or completely cover the wood with a latex paint.
Measure the length and width of the crib mattress. Cut a piece of upholstery fabric with scissors to surround the crib mattress and secure to the plywood board.
Wrap the fabric around the crib mattress and all sides of the plywood board.
Pull the fabric tight and staple it to the bottom of the plywood board.
Measure the pillow stuffing forms and multiply either the height or width by two to determine the amount of fabric for each pillow. Cut out the fabric, fold it over and pin the ends together.
Sew three to five pillows on your sewing machine using upholstery thread for extra wear. These can be used to decorate and add comfort to the settee.
