How to Compare Futons

Futons are flat mattresses, set on a frame, that serve as a couch and a bed. Often chosen as an alternative to more expensive sofa beds, they save space and provide an extra sleeping space for guests.
  1. Mattress Size and Thickness

    • One of the most obvious differences between futons is the mattress size and thickness. Futon mattresses may be the size of a chair, or a twin, full, queen or even king bed. The thickness of a futon mattress usually is directly related to its price.

    Mattress Material

    • The mattress of a futon may be constructed of cotton, polyester, foam, wool, an innerspring mattress or a combination of two or more materials. Cotton and innerspring futon mattresses typically provide the most comfort, but also come with a higher price tag.

    Frame Construction and Design

    • The frame of a futon may be metal, wood or a combination of both. Futon frames also may include features, such as magazine racks, cup holders and arm rests.
