How to Spruce Up an Ugly Sectional

Sectional couches are popular for their versatility. Also called modulars, the sections are separate from each other and can be arranged to fit your space. You can find a sectional couch to fit any décor. But, after years of hard use, your sectional may be a little the worse for wear. If a new couch is not an option, there are ways to give the old one a facelift.

Instructions

    • 1

Reupholster the sectional couch. Choose fabric that reflects your decorating style. Tapestry evokes a traditional décor, while nubby linen works in a Tuscan-inspired room. Cover the couch with fabric that is both attractive and wear resistant.

    • 2

Slipcover the sectional. Hide stains, holes, dirt and other wear and tear with versatile and removable coverings. Have them custom made or buy them online or from catalogs like Sure Fit and the Slipcover Shop. Or shop for them in many department store furniture departments, such as JCPenney.

Refinish areas made of wood, such as legs, arms and decorative trim. Stain or paint them for a fresh look.

    • 4

Mend the couch. Fix legs that are loose or replace those that are beyond repair. Patch holes and worn places with fabric similar to the upholstery or choose a contrasting shade or pattern for a fun and funky look. Sew rips and tears using an upholstery needle and heavy thread in a neutral color that will blend with the fabric on the sectional.

Restuff the couch. Add more foam or batting to the couch cushions to puff them up and make them more comfortable.

    • 6

Accessorize the sectional. Throw a quilt over your sectional and tuck it under the back cushions for an instant face lift. Fold a woven cotton throw in a coordinating color and drape it over the back. Scatter throw pillows of different sizes, shapes, fabrics and colors on it. If the back cushions are loose, cover them in a patterned material to pop against the plain upholstery of the rest of the piece or vice versa.

Clean the couch. Spot clean stains. Vacuum the upholstery. Pick up pet hair with a sticky roller specifically designed for the job.
