How to Cover Seat Cushions With Dacron Wrap

You can wrap a slightly uneven seat cushion with a layer of Dacron wrap to make it look fuller. A layer of soft and puffy Dacron wrap can smooth out cushion edges and make the upholstery cover and foam last longer. If you are making a new cushion, wrap the foam in Dacron before adding the fabric cover. If you are repairing an existing cushion, you will need to unzip and remove the cover before adding a layer of Dacron wrap.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the cushion, going across the top from side to side. The Dacron wrap does not need to go down the cushion sides, so you do not need to measure the sides.

    • 2

Measure all the way around the cushion from the top back edge, across the top, down the front edge, across the bottom and up the back edge to the starting point. The Dacron wrap goes all the way around the cushion from back to front so you need to measure all four surfaces. Do not compress the foam when measuring.

    • 3

Unroll the Dacron wrap and spread it out flat on the grid-cutting mat. Measure across the Dacron from either selvage edge and mark the cushion width you measured every 12 inches using the tailor's chalk. The selvage edges are the outer edges you can see when the material is on the roll.

    • 4

Measure up the roll and mark out the length around the cushion. Line up the yardstick's edge with the marks and draw a chalk line along the yardstick's edge.

    • 5

Cut the Dacron using the rotary cutter. Press down firmly when cutting or the fibers will stretch out and you will have to trim them off using scissors.

    • 6

Fold the Dacron wrap in half, bringing the long ends together, to find the center front. Make a tailor's chalk dot on each side of the fold.

    • 7

Open the wrap and place the cushion standing up on the wrap with the front edge centered across the wrap from dot to dot. Roll the back side of the cushion down until it is flat against the Dacron wrap.

    • 8

Slide your hands under the loose Dacron wrap at the cushion's front edge. Gently lift, smooth and wrap the Dacron up and over the cushion's front edge and top.

    • 9

Press the excess Dacron down the cushion's back edge. Lift up the excess Dacron sticking out along the cushion's bottom edge and press it onto the foam. The Dacron's cut ends should meet in the center of the cushion's back edge. The Dacron and foam will cling together enough to hold the Dacron in place.

    • 10

Slide the Dacron-wrapped cushion into the fabric upholstery cover and reseal it.
