How to Upholster Tufting Buttons

Tufting an upholstered chair or sofa with matching buttons is a classic tailored look. Using buttons upholstered with a contrasting fabric adds interest and gives the piece a more contemporary feel. A chair upholstered in a bright solid fabric such as orange or green looks stunning with buttons covered in fine brown leather. Button covering kits are available at fabric stores in the notions section.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a circle from the fabric using the pattern from the kit. The pattern is often printed on the back of the package.

    • 2

Place the circle of fabric right-side-down over the mold included in the kit. Center it carefully.

    • 3

Place the top of the button right-side-down over the fabric and press it into the mold keeping the fabric centered.

    • 4

Fold the edges of the fabric over into the center of the button, over the edge of the button top. Make small, even tucks around the edge as you fold.

    • 5

Center the back of the button in the mold with the shank up.

    • 6

Use the tool included with the kit to press the back of the button in place. Center the tool and press it evenly so that the back goes in straight. It should snap into place.

    • 7

Press up on the bottom of the mold to release the button.
