How to Get a Scuff Out of a Leather Couch

Leather furniture can provide years of use and enjoyment, but it sometime requires care and tending. Scuffs are areas of dullness or wear. The leather itself isn't actually damaged, but the color or sheen of the leather is marked or worn away. Small scuffs don't require professional repair and can be fixed with a little effort and attention.

Instructions

    • 1

Match the color of your leather oil and leather scratch repair to your leather upholstery. A good color match will ensure that the repair disappears.

    • 2

Clean your leather sofa to remove oils and dirt, and to prepare the upholstery for the repair. Apply the leather cleaner using a clean, soft cloth to work it into a lather. Allow it to dry.

    • 3

Buff the scuffed area with colored leather oil, using a soft cloth and working in small circles. Leather oil in itself will handle many small scuffs and marks, but the more stubborn scuffs will require a leather repair product.

    • 4

Apply the leather scratch repair with a fingertip, dabbing it over the scuff mark. It may take a few applications before you get the desired coverage and color.

    • 5

Sand the edges of the repaired area to blend them into the upholstery. Use a fine grit sandpaper and work lightly to avoid damaging the leather.

    • 6

Condition your leather to give it better protection against future scuffs and to protect the repair. Apply the conditioner according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 7

Allow the conditioner to sit for 15 minutes, or the length of time recommended by the manufacturer, to penetrate into the pores of the leather. Wipe off the excess with a soft cloth.
