How to Choose a Sofa Size

A sofa is one of the most expensive pieces of furniture you can buy for a family room, den or game room. Many people love a sofa in the furniture store, but when they get it home, realize that it is too small for the room. Others choose a roomy sofa to fit their needs only to find out it is too large for the room and impedes foot traffic. Choose a sofa size that suits your home with careful planning and lots of measuring.

Instructions

    • 1

Carry a tape measure to the store with you when you are shopping. Measure the length, height and width of the sofa you are considering buying.

    • 2

Take the measurements home and use the tape measure to map out where you want to place the sofa. Have another person come along behind you to put down strips of masking or painter's tape. This gives you an outline of the sofa on the floor area. You can also use sheets of newspaper for this.

    • 3

Walk around the room with the tape or newspaper in place. Ensure that the placement of the sofa does not make the room appear cramped or cause people to have to walk awkwardly through the area.
