Fill a clean spray bottle with water. Locate a scratch that is inconspicuous to test the repair on your couch. This procedure works best for shallow scratches. Leather Care suggests it for cat scratches or scratches around that depth.
Cut a piece of 1,000-grit sandpaper with scissors to four-by-four inches. Fold the square in half down the middle. The rough part of the paper should be outside.
Saturate the scratch with water from the bottle. The water will soften the exterior surface of the maroon leather.
Sand over the wet scratch with the folded paper until the area smooths out and the scratch disappears. Leather Care states that you can use considerable pressure when sanding. Keep sanding until the raised section in the leather, caused by the split in the from the scratch, dissipates.
Repeat the process for each scratch if the discoloration is not too great. If there is considerable discoloration, purchase a recolor kit from the local hardware store before continuing. Follow the instructions on the kit to recolor the leather after sanding down all of the scratches.
Clean the surface with soapy water after sanding to remove debris. Wipe down with clean towel to dry.
