How to Apply a Slipcover to a Sofa

Slipcovers are fabric coverings that go over your couch or sofa. They come in a variety of materials and colors, allowing homeowners to quickly change the look of the sofa to match a different decor. They also serve a practical function, protecting the sofa from stains or pet hair. Putting a slipcover on a sofa is an easy process. Be sure to purchase a slipcover that matches the dimensions of your sofa.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the slipcover from its packaging and unfold it. Locate the two arms and the flat back portion of the slipcover.

    • 2

Drape the slipcover over the sofa, with the flat back portion over the back of the sofa. Pull the slipcover down over the arms of the sofa, then pull it down over the front and back of the sofa until it reaches the floor.

    • 3

Pull the fabric that covers the seat cushions taut by tugging it toward the armrests. Use the spatula to push the excess fabric down between the armrest and the adjacent seat cushions.

    • 4

Pull the fabric that covers the back rest taut, and push the excess behind the seat cushions with the spatula.

    • 5

Pull the bottom of the slipcover toward the floor until it completely covers the bottom of the sofa, if the slip cover is elastic. If it has ties, pull the ties taut and tie them tightly so the fabric around the bottom of the sofa is tight.
