Couch Slipcover Ideas

Slipcovers are a great way to make old furniture, such as couches and chairs, look like new. Not only are a variety of slipcovers available for purchase, you can easily create your own if you are on a tight budget. Slipcovers not only improve the appearance of furniture but they can also act as protective barriers from pets and children and allow you to play with the look and design of the rooms in your home.
  1. Make Your Own Slipcover

    • If sewing is something you are comfortable with, you can make your own sofa slipcover at home. Use inexpensive fabric in a neutral color, which you can often find during sales at fabric stores. You can also use old bed sheets, which are quite good for practicing. Sewing a functional, attractive slipcover takes a considerable amount of time but there are many online tutorials available to aid you. Once you have mastered the art of sewing a slipcover, upgrade to using nicer, more expensive fabrics. Making your own slipcover can save you a significant amount of money, as the ones in stores are often quite expensive.

    No-Sew Sofa Slipcover

    • You can also create quick, simple sofa slipcovers without touching a sewing machine. Choose an appropriately sized swath of fabric that will cover the entire couch. Place it over the couch and use pins, Velcro, tacks or a staple gun to secure it to the upholstery. This is much less time consuming than using a pattern to sew a slipcover and more cost efficient than purchasing one from a store.

    Protection

    • If you share your home with animals or children, use a slipcover to protect your couch from dirt and stains. Whether you are purchasing or making a slipcover, find a fabric that is thick, such as canvas, and preferably dark in color. This will help to both absorb stains, letting as little as possible of that juice or pop reach the upholstery of the couch, and hide them until the next laundry day. Consider having two different slipcovers, one for use on an everyday basis and another for parties and special events.

    Home Decorating

    • You can also employ couch slipcovers for decorative purposes. If you have two couches that clash in terms of color or pattern, use slipcovers of your desired color to create a matching set. A brightly colored or patterned slipcover paired with neutral walls and decor can give the appearance of a room makeover without all of the effort. Another fun idea is to create or purchase four different slipcovers, or sets of slipcovers. Pair these with neutral paint colors and decor and rotate them according to the season. Consider the colors associated with the seasons, such as white, green, orange and yellow. In a similar manner, holiday slipcovers are an easy way to bring the festive season to your home. Use holiday colors such as red for Christmas and pastels for Easter.
