How to Pick Your Next Sofa in Five Easy Steps

Of all the home furnishings you can buy for your living space, sofas are one of the most integral to its style, comfort and look. The piece has to fit your lifestyle and the level of use it will receive. A leather sofa might not be the best choice if you have cats that aren't declawed, and brocaded upholstery shouldn't top your list if you have a toddler. Before you venture out to the store, have a clear idea of your wants and needs.

Measure your doorway in inches and write it down. There's no use in buying a big, overstuffed sofa if you can't get it through the door. Measure the length and width of your current sofa if you want one that's a similar size.

    • 2

Pick a style of frame. Sofas come in wood or steel frames, reclining and non-reclining. If the sofa will be heavily used, or if it will be used by people of above-average weight, choose steel, because wood frames can warp and sag.

    • 3

Choose a cushion style. Some sofas come with loose cushions and others are sewn onto the frame. Loose cushions make the sofa easier to clean. Decide whether you want fiberfill cushions or foam. Foam is more resilient and holds its shape longer, but is often more expensive than fiberfill.

Select upholstery material color, texture and quality. Sofas come in every type of material, from microfiber to leather to denim. Choose one that fits your lifestyle, in a color that complements the decor of your living room. Be aware that many solid colors will show dirt faster than patterned material.

Settle on a price point above which you will not go. Research prices online or visit several stores for comparison before you begin to negotiate with a salesperson.
