How to Change the Foam in an Upholstered Sofa

The foam is usually the first part of a couch or chair that deteriorates. This foam then makes the chair uncomfortable to sit in. If the rest of the chair or couch is in good shape, do not look into buying an entire new piece of furniture. Simply remove the old foam and replace it with new foam. It will seem like you have a whole new piece of furniture without the high cost. Purchase foam at a local fabric store.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cushions and remove the outer fabric from the foam. Many cushion covers have zippers on the back to allow you to remove the foam easily. Measure the height, width and depth of the foam. Add about ½ to 1 inch to those measurements depending on how badly the foam has deteriorated.

    • 2

Double check the foam measurements, especially if you added to them, by measuring the cushion cover. Use the seams as guides to measure the height, width and depth of the cover. Purchase the amount of foam necessary.

    • 3

Mark out the measurements on the foam using the marker. Cut out the foam using an electric knife to make it much easier.

    • 4

Trim off the corners of the foam, using the electric knife, if the original cushions had rounded edges. Round the edges carefully because you want either side of the cushion to match.

    • 5

Insert the new pieces of foam into the cushion cover making sure that all the corners meet up correctly.
