Ideas for a Couch Cover

Whether you have a brand new couch you are looking to protect or an older couch with some blemishes to cover, couch covers are common in home decorating. Ranging from very expensive to very affordable, couch covers can protect your furniture from wear and tear, stains and pet hair.
  1. Fitted Slip Covers

    • Typically, fitted slip covers provide individual covers for the couch and each of the cushions. Because many couches today -- even couches made by different manufacturers -- have similar sizes and shapes, you can find this type of couch cover in large retail stores or online. Because some furniture retailers sell standard couches in such high volume, you can find slip covers made specifically for those pieces.

    General Couch Covers

    • Less expensive than the fitted covers, you can buy couch covers made to envelop the entire couch in one piece. This kind of cover is designed to tuck into the folds of the couch or crevice between cushions to give it a custom, fitted look. While this kind of cover may not be a perfect fit, you can find this option in a wide variety of sizes and colors.

    Blankets and Throws

    • Many people with pets choose to cover their furniture with a blanket or throw in order to keep the pet's fur off of the couch. This is the most flexible option and is an efficient way to keep the couch clean. Blankets and throws, however, easily slip, fold and bunch making the couch look less than perfect. There are some couch covers made specifically for pet use.

    Heavy Rug

    • Although using a large, heavy rug to cover a couch is a more avant-garde choice, the look can be very appealing. Because rugs are sturdy and thick, they tend to stay in place longer than just a blanket. Laying the rug over the couch so the arms remain exposed, the entire center section of the couch is covered. Oriental rugs give an upscale international look, while a solid colored cotton rug gives a more casual look.
