How to Renew Your Sofa

When you purchase a sofa, you are making an investment in a piece of furniture that will not only be the centerpiece of your living room, but will also likely become the most used piece of furniture in the house. If it starts to sag a bit with use or you want to redecorate, it is more cost effective to do a little rejuvenation on your sofa than buy another one. With a few simple tools and some new fabric, you can give you old sofa new life and a new look.

Things You'll Need

  • Plywood board
  • Hand saw
  • Marking pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • T square
  • Sandpaper
  • Sofa slipcover in desired color or pattern
  • Upholstery tacks
  • Throw pillows or blankets to accent slipcover (optional)

Instructions

      Remove all cushions from thesofa.

      Measure the length and width of the sitting area of the sofa. Mark down measurements.

      Measure and mark plywood to the measurements you took earlier. Use the T square and ruler to make straight cutting lines.

      Saw the plywood to size along cutting lines.

      Sand edges of the plywood lightly.

      Place plywood over the springs of your sofa.

      Replace the cushions.

      Pull the slipcover over the entire sofa.

      Tack loose areas of the slipcover using the upholstery tacks.

      Decorate the sofa with new throw pillows or blankets as desired.
