Use a Tapestry

• Tapestries are large pieces of fabric with an image or design. The fabric pieces are typically used as a decorative element on a wall. Use a tapestry as a new slipcover or upholstery for your sofa. Place the tapestry directly on the couch and adjust the fabric until it reaches the bottom of the couch on both the front and back. Tuck the fabric into the cushions and secure on the edges with upholstery tacks.

Velour

• Velour is a fabric that is soft to the touch. When fitted to a sofa, the fabric gives it a unique appearance. Velour comes in neutral colors, but for a funky look, opt for a bright color. Hot pink, bright red or even purple gives an upbeat and funky vibe to the couch. You can even opt for two colors on the sofa, but pick two colors that complement each other. For example, pick a shade of purple and dark blue, or black and bright red.

Printed Upholstery

Just the Edges

• Upholster the sofa in two fabrics: one plain fabric and one patterned fabric. Use the plain fabric on the cushions, back, sides and other larger parts of the sofa. Use the patterned fabric on the front edge of the sofa, the edges of the cushions and along the arms. The two fabrics create a cohesive look, but have a funkier slant than using just one fabric.
