How to Move a Couch in a Narrow Basement

Couches are often problematic when it comes to moving them, due to a combination of their weight and their burdensome size. Sofas are often cumbersome to hold on to, and maneuvering them through a hallway requires care because their length makes it very likely that they'll collide with a wall or a doorway during transport. Basement walls are often made of concrete, so while the walls themselves won't be damaged, your couch can be torn or chipped if you're not careful.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the legs from the bottom of the couch if they are removable to give yourself some extra space when moving the couch. Remove the cushions as well.

    • 2

Measure both the couch and the height and width of the basement and any doorways to determine how much room you'll have to work with when trying to move the couch.

    • 3

Ask someone to help you when it's time to move the sofa. This helps reduce the risk of injury, and another person will help prevent damage to the couch or any doorways.

    • 4

Tilt the couch to get the largest dimension of the couch facing up and down to maximize the free space widthwise when you are turning a corner or going through a door.
