Instructions

    • 1

Clean the couch. Clean your couch per the manufacturer's instructions. If no instructions are provided, use castille soap and a damp rag to clean a leather couch. Vacuum and spot clean a fabric couch.

    • 2

Redye your couch if the color in the fabric is fading. In most cases, dye of the same color can be applied directly to the fabric or leather in the same fashion stain is applied to floors to spruce up the color itself. In some cases, the fabric may have to be removed from the couch frame before redying can occur. Check dye packaging, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for best results. Consult with a professional, if needed.

Add a little color to the couch itself. Place pastel or bold-colored throw pillows on your couch. Add a simple blanket in the same shade or a complementary color over the couch's back to brighten up the look.

    • 4

Lighten the space the couch is in. If your walls are too dark or painted a color that competes with your couch, it can make your couch look shabby. Paint the walls a bold, bright color, like red, or lighten up the space by applying a light blue or cream paint to the walls.

Change the cushions on your couch, if all else fails. Recover the cushions in a fabric with a contrasting color, like white, or a fun print you like, to break up the black monotony of your couch, if it's too much. Use a striped cushion for a sleek, modern look, or create a retro feel with a polka-dot fabric.
