What to Look for in a Love Seat

When your living space is too small for a standard sofa, but your seating needs dictate more than a single chair, a loveseat could be your ideal seating solution. Because loveseats are significantly shorter than standard-size sofas, they fit nicely into those tight living areas of your home. Comfort, style, material and space are essential factors to consider when contemplating a loveseat selection.
  1. Comfort

    • A loveseat is a "mini version" of a standard sofa, providing the same basic comforts. Standard-size sofa average 90 inches wide, while a typical loveseat spans 56 to 60 inches. A loveseat is a cozy seating option for two. You should always sit on a loveseat before selecting one for your home. The seat depth and height, back height and arm style vary and are designed to accommodate a variety of body proportions.

    Style

    • Whether your style is modern, traditional or a transitional mix of the two, a loveseat can be found to complement any decor. An easy, smooth reclining mechanism for controlling each section of a loveseat allows you to lean back and prop your feet up. A sleeper loveseat incorporates an extra pull-out bed for one or two overnight guests. Decorative throw pillows and slip covers enable you to instantly transform your loveseat's style.

    Material

    • Microfiber, leather, faux leather and chenille are a sampling of the choices available when selecting a loveseat. Consider who will generally use the loveseat, how it will be used and other furniture pieces in the room. Leather is long-lasting and gorgeous, but children and pets can scar, blemish and scuff fine leather. A fabric that is manufactured to withstand the sun's ultraviolet rays would be a wise choice in a room filled with windows.

    Space

    • Determine how much room is available for your loveseat. Twelve to 18 inches is the optimum space between the loveseat and coffee table. Leave a minimum of 3 feet behind the loveseat if the area is used as a main passageway in the room. An ottoman positioned in front of the loveseat should be situated so you can sit on the loveseat and comfortably rest your feet on the ottoman.
