How to Decorate with an Inflatable Sofa

Inflatable sofas and chairs can be an unexpected seating option, adding functionality and character to your sitting area. While these pieces might not provide as much seating capacity as traditional furniture, they do offer numerous environmental benefits related to dematerialization, the practice of using fewer material resources to manufacture products. According to Carlo Vezzoli, Ezio Manzini, the authors of "Design for Environmental Sustainability," inflatable couches can contains as much as 15 percent less material than traditional sofas.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a space for the sofa that is level and removed from heaters, air conditioners or windows. Ensure there is a 6-inch to 12-inch gap between the inflatable sofa, the wall and any other furniture.

    • 2

Clean the room thoroughly; dirt and debris can puncture your sofa.

    • 3

Arrange furniture in the room. Move in other furniture before moving in the inflatable sofa. Avoid placing items that have sharp edges, drawers or hooks near the sofa as they could potentially pierce the inflatable cushions. Compliment the inflatable sofa with items that have similarly curved silhouettes such as gumdrop ottomans and round bookcases. Contrast the sofa with angular wall art and upright storage units.

    • 4

Spread a quilt or bed mat on the floor where the sofa will be placed to protect the bottom of the sofa from dirt or debris.

    • 5

Place the deflated sofa in the chosen location and inflate on-site.
