What Kind of Throw Pillows to Use for a Large Cranberry Microfiber Sectional

A cranberry red sectional is a strong focal point on which to base your living room's color scheme. However, sectionals are quite large, and you may find that such a sizable expanse of red needs to be visually broken up to add interest to the sectional and to the room. Throw pillows are an easy option to accomplish that goal.
  1. Colors

    • When selecting a main color for your throw pillows, look to some other piece in the room for colors to draw from. A patterned rug, lamp, curtains or a picture on the wall are smart choices for color inspiration. Gold, rust, plum, tan and brown go well with cranberry red as do black and white. If you choose green throw pillows, ensure a third color is also prominent so it doesn't look as though you're decorating for Christmas. Red throw pillows will disappear against the sectional while fabrics with a touch of red will tie in and coordinate nicely.

    Patterns

    • Patterns add much more visual interest than solids and allow you to work more than one accent color into your room. You have endless variety for patterns. Whether formal, casual, contemporary, romantic or rustic, choose a pattern that fits well with your room's style. Stripes, dots, florals, plaids, geometrics, novelties and abstract prints are just a few pattern choices available. If you are going for a minimalistic or austere look, stick with solid colors.

    Fabrics

    • In a casual room you can work in throw pillows made of corduroy, twill, canvas or even chunky sweater knits. For a more formal room, choose silk dupioni, brocade, velvet, lavish embroidery or needlepoint. Unexpected textures and fabrics, such as faux fur, patent vinyl or metallic fabrics offer big drama. Trims such as fringe and tassels give a luxurious, completed look.

    Size and Number

    • The size of your sectional and the throw pillow fabric you've chosen determine the size and number of throw pillows you should use. If you have a very large sectional or have chosen throw pillows without much color contrast to the red in your couch, you can use use larger and more numerous pillows. If your sectional is on the smaller side or if you've chosen pillows with a high degree of color contrast, use less of them and keep them smaller in scale. While layer upon layer of throw pillows make for a very rich, luxurious look, layering may not be practical for sofas that get lots of everyday use.

    Other Considerations

    • Choose one fabric for the majority of your throw pillows and a second, coordinating fabric for two or three smaller throw pillows, which will give you enough repetition of color, fabric and texture for a cohesive look while adding interest and a touch of the unexpected. One whimsical selection, such as a pillow featuring an embroidered animal or a large script initial, is a fun addition that adds interest.
