Is There a Do-It-Yourself Leather Dye for a White Sofa?

Over time, a white leather sofa may begin to stain and yellow due to age, smoke or the sun's beating rays. Since humans generally find the need to change and adapt to revolving tastes, style and decor, white may not be your color of choice. Instead of dumping the sofa by the curb, you can easily change its color with a do-it-yourself dye kit, which contains sufficient materials to dye the white leather a custom color.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic sheeting
  • Vacuum
  • Clean rag
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • 2 soft cloths
  • Leather deglazer
  • Leather dye
  • Airbrush sprayer

Instructions

    • 1

Move the leather sofa to an area where any extra leather dye won't damage nearby furniture, decor or flooring. Lay plastic sheeting underneath the sofa if you are unable to move it to another location.

    • 2

Prepare the white leather sofa for re-dyeing by vacuuming between crevices, seams and cushions, using the hand vacuum. Dampen a clean rag with rubbing alcohol.

    • 3

Rub all surfaces of the leather sofa with the alcohol-dampened cloth. The alcohol will remove grease, oil and dirt clinging to the leather.

    • 4

Dampen a soft cloth with deglazer and use it to wipe the leather sofa. Leather deglazers, which come in most dye kits, will remove all coatings and finishes previously applied to the white leather at the time of manufacturing.

    • 5

Pour the leather dye into an airbrush sprayer as indicated on the included color guide. The guide will allow you to select your new color for the white leather sofa and apply the different colors in separate layers.

    • 6

Turn on the airbrush and direct the sprayer toward a scrap piece of wood or cardboard to practice your first spray pattern. Twist the sprayer tip to adjust the spray so produces an even, light spray pattern.

    • 7

Apply the first coat of leather dye in light, even strokes. Hold the sprayer tip 6 to 8 inches away from the leather sofa. Wipe up any excess dye or areas where the dye begins to run, using a clean, soft cloth. Allow the first layer of dye to dry.

    • 8

Spray additional coats of dye onto the sofa with the airbrush sprayer, cleaning the sprayer after each new color. Allow each additional coat of leather dye to dry before spraying additional layers.
