Unique Sofas & Ottomans

Adding unique touches to a room is not limited to paint colors and accessories. Sofas and ottomans, furniture staples, can also create unique focal points in a room. For those with modern or contemporary decorating tastes, a variety of colorful and uniquely shaped sofas and ottomans can be the focus of a room.
  1. Animal Sofas

    • Move beyond sofas with simple zebra stripes or leopard prints. Tappezzeria Rocchetti (tappezzeriarochetti.com) in Rome, Italy offers sofas designed to look like real animals. Buyers can purchase sofas shaped like a tiger, a jaguar or a comical cow, complete with animal heads, feet and tails. These sofas are made with faux fur. For ottomans, East West Futons (eastwestfutons.com) contracts with local craftsmen to produce ottomans shaped like an elephant, rhinoceros or bull dog. Ditz Designs (ditzdesigns.com) offers ottomans and footrests designed to look like farm and forest animals.

    Multiple Pieces

    • Some sofas are made up of smaller, uniquely-shaped pieces that you can arrange in a variety of ways. From Moroso (moroso.it), the Do-Lo-Rez sofa is made up of rectangular-shaped units of varying heights that are formed in a basic sofa shape. The rectangular units are re-arranged to make a variety of shapes. French design company Homology (homology.com) offers LunaBlocks, similar in appearance to Legos building blocks. These large blocks re-arrange to create a unique sofa.

    Funky Colors

    • Sofas in unique colors and patterns can improve a neutral room. Japansese company Waazwiz (waazwiz.com) has created a sofa with an acrylic base that lights up, bringing bright colors to a dark room. The Pixel Sofa from Kvadrat, a European textile design company, uses a pixelated fabric to cover a wide spectrum of colors. CubeMe's Hollywood Stardom Sofa is made from metallic silver leather that is sure to shimmer in nearly any room.

    Unique Shapes

    • Some sofas offer unique shapes to provide visual interest and make compact living more enjoyable. Bonbon (bonbon.co.uk) offers DOC, a sofa that converts into a bunk bed. For those who prefer a custom sofa, German architect Hackenbroich created the Sitscape sofa. Sold by the meter, this sofa is designed to provide customers with a sofa designed for their favorite seating positions. The Feel Seating System, by Animi Causa (animicausa.com) is created out of 120 soft foam balls. You can mold it into a variety of shapes to accommodate lounging, reading and sleeping.
