Is It OK to Put a Couch Under a Window?

Couches are the focal point of your living space. They provide you with a place to relax after a long day at work, a place to gather with friends to watch the game and a comfy space to read your favorite book. Where you place your couch is important, but sometimes options are limited and you're forced to place your couch in a position that you wouldn't usually consider, such as in front of a window, due to square-footage limitations and limited wall space.
  1. Sunlight Complications

    • Ultraviolet lights, over time, cause your couch fabric to fade. If your window doesn't see a lot of sun during the day, it's not a problem to put your couch under the window. However, if your window does let in a lot of sun during the day, over time, the sun's UV rays begin to ruin the quality of the couch. If you decide to place your couch under the window, take precautions to protect the quality of your couch.

    Slipcovers

    • Slipcovers protect your couch from fading while it is in the sunlight. Choose a light-colored slipcover (such as white, tan, pale green or cream-colored), versus a darker-colored slipcover, to deter the sun's rays. If you don't have a slipcover, a large blanket or bedsheet will serve the same purpose protecting your couch from harmful ultraviolet rays.

    Potential Hazards

    • With your couch pushed up under a window, this could prove hazardous, especially if you have curious young children or pets. Although your child or pet may just want to look outside, if the window is open and they lean too far forward, you may have a serious accident waiting to happen. Also, if the window is a valuable fire exit from your home, refrain from blocking access to the window with your couch.

    Feng Shui

    • Feng shui is the ancient Chinese approach to promoting good energy flow in your home in order to find balance. This philosophy states that by arranging your furniture in specific ways, you allow harmony in that space. According to the beliefs of feng shui, couches should never be placed in front of windows, since windows are where energy leaves the room and the couch would prevent energy from leaving.
