What to Do With Broken Couches?

Broken couches can be used for creative purposes; figuring out what to do simply takes a bit of imagination and innovation. In the meantime, let your kids use the couch as a trampoline, a stage, a fort or an island to seek refuge from the sharks in the carpet. If you're sentimental but not handy enough to fix the couch, cut off a piece of the fabric for a scrapbook before you ship the couch off to the furniture store in the sky.
  1. Outside/ Basement Furniture

    • Broken couches aren't only for living room, dining room or bedroom furniture; they can be used in less formal areas of the home. Put them in basements and garages for rest and relaxation in between various activities. In warm areas or during summer months, move a broken couch in the backyard or on patios for guests to sit during barbecues and other outside festivities.

    Child's Play

    • Place broken couches in children's rooms or other play areas for romping and bouncing around. Search the couch first to make sure there aren't any broken springs or wooden splinters exposed, to maximize child safety.

    Use it For Scrap

    • If the couch is broken beyond any functional purpose, tear it apart and use it for scrap. The wood can be used for various home and/or creative projects; the cloth can be ripped up and used for making doll clothes or cleaning cloths, for reupholstering another piece of furniture or fabric for quilts and other creative projects.

    Throw It Away

    • If you can think of no other uses for it, throw your broken couch away. Call the garbage company that serves your municipality and inquire whether or not you can simply set the couch on the curb, or whether you need to wait for a specific day, or haul the couch to the dump yourself.

    Fix It

    • If you have the tools and the expertise, try to fix your broken couch. If you lack the know-how but feel the couch is worth salvaging, take it to a professional. Call around first; some repair companies will come pick the couch up for you.

    Donate It

    • Broken couches can be donated. Call around to the Goodwill, Salvation Army or other charitable organizations. Terms may vary; some companies will pick up the couch, while others will ask you to drop it off.
