Unusual Sofas and Couches

Becoming aware of common traits found in traditional sofa and couch styles may foster a better appreciation of the unusual style. Sofa is derived from the Arabic word "suffah," describing a bench that has been covered by cushions and blankets. Couch comes from a French word, "couche," meaning an armless piece of furniture. Modern couches commonly feature a tapered back with one arm or none at all, while sofas include two arms and a uniform back. Conversely, the unusual sofa or couch displays impractical, bizarre, eccentric or whimsical styles.
  1. Construction Materials

    • Many of the construction materials used in creating unusual sofas and couches are not chosen for comfort. Some materials are selected because of their abundant availability. The outrageous sofa created from obsolete mouse pads or the sofa blanketed with stuffed animals are made from plentiful resources. The more bizarre, the better; the coffin couch is created from an actual coffin with added leather cushions. Sofas made from recycled bathtubs, vintage car parts, egg cartons and Styrofoam make use of unusual construction materials.

    Thematic

    • Sofas and couches displaying a designated theme are whimsical and extraordinary. An animal-themed sofa, such as a tiger, cow or puma created from faux fur that is characteristic to the animal they are emulating creates an instant conversation piece. Giant Legos specifically manufactured to "build your own sofa" and S-shaped couches made to look like a mythical monster, complete with an attached head at the end of the couch, reflect playful furniture creations.

    Sofa Chairs

    • Sofa chairs merge features found in sofas and chairs and combine them to create a single piece of furniture. They are comfortable and practical, ranging from traditionally conventional to totally bizarre styles. The fire-engine-red sofa chair created in the shape of lips, or the sofa chair made to look like a musical note, reflect unusual style. A puzzle-piece sofa chair allows the pieces to be taken apart and reconfigured into a coffee table or temporary sofa bed.

    Outrageous

    • Sofas that appear to be climbing up the wall, with two legs on the floor and two legs against the wall, depict a bizarre sofa style. The double-decker sofa, composed of two individual sofas stacked on top of one another through supportive poles, is impractical and outrageous. A pool sofa is configured with a small pool of water designed as the seat cushion with an actual back cushion to lean on while sitting in the water.
