How to Fix a Zippered Sofa Cushion

Over time, even the toughest upholstery zippers wear out. When this happens, you can either replace the sofa cushion or replace the zipper for a lot less money. Replacing sofa zippers is very easy, but it does take some patience and a steady hand. While you can hand sew a zipper into place, using a machine is best.

Instructions

    • 1

Unzip the cushion and remove all the stuffing.

    • 2

Turn the cushion inside out and look for the stitches holding the zipper in place.

    • 3

Remove the stitches with a seam ripper. Be careful not to tear the fabric.

    • 4

Verify that the new zipper's size is the same as the old zipper. If the new zipper is longer, cut it from the bottom so the zippers are the same size.

    • 5

Pin the new zipper into place.

    • 6

Sew the zipper into position, removing the pins as you go.

    • 7

Finish off the zipper by sewing a straight stitch 1/4 inch from the zipper teeth.
