How to Fix a Button on a Couch

Most couch buttons are designed to press into upholstered fabric, creating an aesthetically pleasing indentation. The round buttons are also typically covered with fabric that matches the rest of the couch's upholstery. If your couch button becomes loose, scratched or torn, you can repair it with common supplies from a fabric store.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Snip the thread connecting the button to the couch to remove the button if you need to replace its fabric.

    • 2

Purchase a button covering kit made for your couch button's size.

    • 3

Snip a piece of fabric from an inconspicuous spot on the couch.

    • 4

Place the pattern included with the button covering kit over the piece of fabric and cut a circle.

    • 5

Place the circle wrong side up over the plastic button mold included with the kit.

    • 6

Press the top button piece over the fabric into the mold. Smooth out all wrinkles and folds. Fold the edges of the fabric over the top piece of the button.

    • 7

Place the bottom button piece over the folded fabric.

    • 8

Press the button kit's rivet tool over the button's stem until you hear a snap. The new button is complete.

    • 9

Hold the button at the desired place on your couch.

    • 10

Thread a curved upholstery needle with 2 feet of thread. Tie a simple knot at the end.

    • 11

Stick the needle into the couch fabric 1/8 of an inch away from the buttonhole. Pull it out on the opposite side of the buttonhole. Thread the needle through the button's hole and pull tight. Repeat this process until the button is secure.

Tie a knot in the end of the thread and apply a dab of super glue to hold the knot in place. Cut off loose threads.
