How Do I Reattach the Buttons on the Back of a Couch?

If your couch has loose buttons or buttons that have popped off the back, this is due to normal use. When a person sits on the couch, the fabric is stretched and pulled taut. After the person stands, the fabric is relaxed again. This regular stress causes the buttons to loosen as the stitches are stretched over and over again. Fortunately, loose buttons and buttons that pop off a couch can be put back in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the button away from the couch back by hand, exposing the connecting thread, if it is still attached.

    • 2

Cut the connecting thread with scissors and set the button aside. Pull out any other loose threads and cut them as well.

    • 3

Pick up the button and unwrap the thread, pulling off with tweezers if necessary.

    • 4

Rethread the button as it was originally threaded with new thread. Use enough thread to allow for sewing the button back into place.

    • 5

Hold the button near the hole in the fabric where it came out. Insert the free end of the thread into the eye of a needle and stitch through the back of the couch, pulling the button's shank back into place.

Make several stitches through the back of the couch to hold the button in place. Insert the needle just below the button after it is sufficiently stitched, pull the needle through the sofa back and pull taut. Snip the thread and allow it to retract back behind the fabric where it will be concealed.
