DIY Couch Cover

Instead of purchasing a couch cover for your home, make a cover for half the price. This DIY project is a low-cost option for a custom-made couch slipcover. All you need is basic sewing skills and a few supplies available at hobby and fabric stores. The cover will revitalize an old couch, or add a protective barrier for a new one. Make several covers for your couch so you always have one available, even on washday.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the body width starting at the front floor, over the seat and stopping at the back floor. Measure the body length from one side to the opposite site. Add 12 inches to both measurements for the seams and tucking.

    • 2

Measure the side width, from the front corner to rear corner. Measure the side length, starting at the side floor and over the arm to the point where the cushion starts. Add 2 inches to both measurements for seams.

    • 3

Write down the adjusted measurements and sketch a drawing of the three pieces needed to make the cover. Use the body width and length for a rectangle body piece. Use the side width and length for two arm pieces.

    • 4

Cut out the three pieces of fabric to make the cover. Piece together two pieces of fabric with a 1/2-inch seam to make the body section if your fabric is not wide enough to fit your couch.

    • 5

Lay the body rectangle over the couch so the short ends are along the front floor and back floor. Smooth the fabric over the seat cushions and couch back.

    • 6

Lay the arm pieces in the correct position on the couch. Pin them to the body piece with right sides together. Sew the arms to the body with a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 7

Lay the cover on the couch with the right side of fabric facing down. Smooth the cover over the seat cushions and back so the arms line up correctly. Pin the front and side edges together, then the back and side edges together.

    • 8

Remove the cover from the couch and sew the four edges together with a 1/2-inch seam.

    • 9

Hem the cover by turning under the bottom edge 1/4 of an inch, then 1/2 an inch. Press the turned edge with an iron to hold it in place for sewing. Sew close to inside turned edge with a straight stitch.
