How Much Fabric Covers a Sofa With Cushions?

Covering a couch with new fabric can seem like an overwhelming task, especially in the beginning when determining how much fabric to buy. Taking the parts of the couch one by one will help you figure out how much fabric you need. Buy all of your fabric at the same time as different bolts may vary in color shades. Upholstery and decorator fabrics measure from 45 to 54 inches in width.
  1. Cushions

    • The number of cushions that your couch has affects the amount of yardage you need. Some couches have two cushions, while others can have three or even four. To figure out how much fabric you need for each cushion, measure the length and the width. Add a ½ yard to that for the sides. If you want to add piping to your cushions, add another yard of fabric for each. On average, each cushion will take approximately 2 ½ to 3 yards. Add more fabric if you need to match up stripes or plaids.

    Front and Back

    • Figure how much fabric you need for the front and back by measuring the couch. Measure the back since it is flat and straight. Measure from the top of the couch to the bottom edge. This gives you a good idea of what fabric width you need to be looking for. If the back of your couch is 50 inches, it is best to buy a 54-inch wide fabric instead of piecing together two pieces of 45-inch fabric. However much fabric you figure you need for the back, double it to add for the front. Add an additional 2 yards of fabric if you want to add piping around the seams of the couch.

    Sides

    • When figuring the amount of fabric necessary for the sides of the couch, it can be a little tricky. Pretend the sides are squares instead of trying to exactly measure around the curves and the arms. Measure the entire square and double it to get the fabric amount for one side. Double it again to get the amount needed for both sides.

    Skirting

    • Skirting is an option when recovering your furniture. Skirting can be gathered or pleated. It adds a lot of extra yardage, up to another 10 yards of fabric. When measuring for the skirting, measure the perimeter of the couch and double it. Also measure from the base of the couch to the floor and add an extra 3 inches to allow for hemming.
