Measure each section of the couch to determine how much fabric you need. Different sections include the inside and outside back, seat, inside and outside arms, front band and front arm panels. Take horizontal, vertical and width measurements of each section of the couch covered with fabric and note them. Add 2 inches to each measurement for seam allowances.
Remove the existing fabric bottom up from the couch using a staple remover and stitch ripper. Strip the bottom, outside arms and outside back fabric first. Avoid damaging the old fabric since you will use it as the template for the new fabric. Also avoid damaging the padding if it is reusable.
Inspect the padding, springs and frame of the couch and replace damaged parts before replacing it with fabric. If the padding is damaged, cover it with a sheet of synthetic padding and hammer it in place. Run your hand over the seat and tighten springs that feel loose. Tighten the legs or arms of the couch and replace damaged or broken sections of the frame.
Spread the new fabric on a clean floor and lay the old fabric pieces over it. Provide 1 inch for seam allowance around each old fabric cutout before forming a dotted line over the new fabric. Measure the length and width of the cushions and transfer them to the new fabric, along with a 1-inch seam allowance. Sew the cushion pieces together. Cut around the outlines using sharp fabric scissors.
Attach the new fabric sections to the couch using staples. Secure one end of a fabric cutout to the padding and stretch it gently to the other side so it is taut and free from folds before stapling it in place. Continue attaching the fabric to the sofa until it is completely covered. Space staples 1 to 2 inches apart.
Sew cushion pieces together using a sewing machine. Make slip covers with a zipper at one end for easy removal and cleaning.
